Insider shares important update regarding Corey Perry and the Leafs
Following his meeting with the NHL's Commissioner, Gary Bettman, Corey Perry has been cleared to return to the NHL after having his contract terminated by the Chicago Blackhawks before the holidays. Perry's dismissal still remains shrouded in mystery and we may never know the full details of the investigation or what the nature of his infraction was. Nevertheless, Perry will be able to resume his NHL career. The questions now are "when?" and "where?".
There was a report coming out of Toronto last week that there was mutual interest between the Maple Leafs and Corey Perry on a potential deal. The thought excited Leaf fans, as Perry had become a bit of a Leaf killer in recent years. However, one insider has stepped in to send a bit of a message to fans, cautioning them not to get ahead of themselves.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman is not sold on the Perry to Toronto rumours just yet. Perry has been very quiet about his search for a new home thus far and one of the big questions that Friedman has about Perry is whether he'd prefer to keep things in his life a little quieter than they'd be if he signed in Toronto.
"I just think one of the questions, is Perry going to want somewhere quieter? TOR is a loud market, I don't think that's going to work. EDM's a louder market, though I definitely believe they have interest. Are there going to be some teams in quieter situations?" - Friedman on Perry and the Leafs
Perry does have some experience playing in a volatile hockey market, as he had spent some time with the Montreal Canadiens in 2020-21, and of course, his most recent stint with the Blackhawks. Would playing in Toronto really be that much different? It might, but Perry is used to the spotlight, especially at this stage of his career.
There have been longstanding rumours of Perry's desire to wear a Maple Leafs jersey before he retires, so we'll have to wait and see if that dream comes to fruition. The Leafs are certainly looking for ways to get better and adding Perry to a struggling bottom six could help a lot, provided he can stay out of trouble.
