Tavares had an abundance of suitors trying to court him during the free agency process in the summer of 2018, but in the end, the 1st overall pick from 2009 opted to leave some money on the table to sign a 7-year contract with his hometown Maple Leafs and the rest, as they say, is history.
During the 2018-19 season and long afterward, Tavares was booed relentlessly every time he stepped on the ice on Long Island. Fans called him a snake and a liar for years, and still do, which is quite unfortunate when you consider that he gave the organization 9 good, solid years of service and was a consummate pro during his time with the Isles.
Surely, last night would have been different, right? The Isles' former captain coming back to where it all started with a chance to reach the 1,000 points milestone... isn't that just poetic? Well, as it turns out, even after 6 years, the Islanders still can't let it go. From the second Tavares stepped on the ice at UBS Arena, he was booed, instantly.
Tavares did end up notching a goal and an assist on the night to hit the 1,000 point plateau against the team who drafted him, and the organization did opt to honour him with a message of congratulations on the scoreboard, but the fans did not show Tavares the respect he has earned and deserves.
I don't know about you, but I've moved on from all of my exes. I'm sure as hell not holding any grudges 6 years after the fact. It's time for Islanders fans to move on and find something new to be mad about.
