The Barzal deal is an 8-year pact worth $9.15M per season, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Definitely a lofty deal for a player who has topped the point-per-game mark just once in his last 5 seasons.
The 25-year-old center suited up in 73 games last season, scoring just 15 goals and 59 points. Barzal is entering the final year of a 3-year, $21M deal, which carries a $7M AAV.
Isles GM Lou Lamoriello continues to show questionable judgement when it comes to the contracts he's been handing out. Barzal is a quality young player, there's no question. But at 25 years of age, it's not as though Barzal is going to suddenly explode offensively and become a 100-point player, even though he's being paid like one.
