Going into this season, one of the biggest questions in Leafs Nation was, will Nick Robertson break through and earn a full time role in the NHL? Through three preseason games, the 2019 second round pick (53rd overall) has shown he's all but ready to take the next step in his career and head coach Sheldon Keefe is noticing Robertson's effort.
After the Leafs' 5-1 win on Monday against the Montreal Canadians, Sheldon Keefe had this to say about the promising young forward:
"Nick had another good day. He's playing really good hockey right now. He's doing things he needs to do to show that he's wanting a spot on the team and he's ready to play in the NHL. As he continues to stack these games up, of course, we're paying attention."
Going into training camp, Keefe said that the youngster would get opportunity to play big minutes with good players. Tonight he had that opportunity, playing alongside Alex Kerfoot and William Nylander, which seemed to pay off as Willy Styles and Robertson both finished with three points. Nylander had 2 goals and 1 assist, Robertson had 3 apples and, Kerfoot finished with two goals.
With Robertson showing those flashes of greatness that we have all been waiting for, he appears to be putting the coaching staff on notice that he is ready for full-time NHL action this season.
