Robertson was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2019 NHL entry draft. The following season, he was sent back to the Peterborough Pete's of the Ontario Hockey League. That season, Robertson skyrocketed to the top of the Leafs prospect pool by scoring an unprecedented 55 goals in 46 games before the season was cancelled due to the pandemic. Since then, he has spent notable time on the injured reserve, while bouncing between the Toronto Marlies and Leafs.
Robertson was very effective last night. In addition to his three assists, he also had five shots on goal. He played on the Leafs' second line, alongside William Nylander and Alexander Kerfoot, and did not look out of place. At this point, it feels like the Leafs have to give the 21-year-old a spot come opening night. Whether or not he sticks will be entirely up to him.
