The injured Jake Muzzin, who was recently placed on LTIR due to a cervical spine injury suffered earlier in the season, attended the Leafs morning skate ahead of their matchup against the Devils.
Muzzin, who is out indefinitely, will seek to be re-evaluated in late February after playing just four games for the Leafs this season and currently sits six points shy of 300 on his career. Muzzin's injury came in the Leafs 4-2 loss against the Arizona Coyotes in mid-October, but he has since stayed involved and around team activities. Muzzin was last spotted during the Leafs California road trip, seeking additional treatment in Los Angeles.
The Leafs have emphasized the importance of Muzzin's long-term health, being the young father that he is and extending the thoughts to the future of his life after his hockey career is concluded. It's uncertain, but it's unlikely that Muzzin ever plays again, at least to the same level of effectiveness as the shutdown defenseman and quality penalty killer he once was.
Muzzin has reportedly remained involved in team meetings and has been in the gym daily, maintaining his team leader persona. His presence puts the players and fans at ease, as he seems to be in good spirits. His continued support will help in keeping the Leafs engaged and focused on the task at hand as Muzzin continues to show his Stanley Cup-winning leadership around this young Leafs team.
