Per a report from Postmedia writer and TSN radio personality Bruce Garrioch, it would appear as though one player the Leafs have actually "kicked tires" on is Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers.
The Canucks are in for another long season, owners of an abysmal 5-9-3 record and many feel as though the team is headed towards the crossroads of whether or not to re-tool or flat out rebuild around their key young pieces. If that does happen, Myers and his lofty $6M cap hit through 2023-24 would almost certainly be on the move.
From the Leafs' standpoint, Myers does check a few boxes in that he's a big body (6'8, 230 lbs) and is a right-shot defenseman. However, this is one of those deals, in my opinion, that only stands a chance of getting done if the Canucks retain a significant portion of his salary. There's also the little matter of Myers owning a 10-team no-trade list. No word about whether or not Toronto might be on that list, but I'd imagine that even if they are, Myers might agree to waive knowing that he'd be heading to a contending team.
In terms of what the Leafs might have to give up for the 32-year-old blueliner, that's really anyone's guess. He has never really been the type of player who will produce high-end numbers offensively on a consistent basis. He has not surpassed the 40-point plateau since his rookie season in 2009-10. His playoff numbers are also nothing to write home about, with just 15 points to his credit through 49 playoff games. I can't imagine that the price would be high, but if the Canucks were to eat 50% of his contract this year and next, that would boost Myers' value I'm sure.
