Jakob Chychrun has yet to play a game this season and is still one of the most sought-after defensemen on the NHL's trade market. Why? Because he can play both sides, is 24 years-old and is signed for two more seasons after this for a reasonable $4.6M per year. He has asked for a trade out of Arizona, but until he sees game action, the Coyotes will likely be unable to move him.

With the news of Jake Muzzin injured for what is likely the remainder of the season, many will want the Leafs and Kyle Dubas to go after the young blueliner. However, it is not a good idea at all. The Leafs have no need for an injury-prone defenseman and spending what little trade capital they have to acquire another would be a mistake.

Another reason to avoid a Chychrun trade is that since he scored the game-winner in overtime against the Leafs last March, as Cam Charron points out, he has played a grand total of 5 minutes and 51 seconds and currently there is no timetable for his return.

With Timothy Liljegren, Rasmus Sandin and Morgan Rielly already more than capable of providing offense from the blueline, the Leafs don't need a fourth offensive defenseman. They need a steady, stay-at-home blueliner to help with controlled exits and defend in their own zone.
