Jake Muzzin has been out since October 17th after suffering, what the Leafs called at the time, a neck injury and has yet to resume training or skating. Today, the Leafs announced that Muzzin has a cervical spine injury and will be out indefinitely.

The Leafs mentioned that Muzzin will be re-evaluated at the end of February, but it unfortunately does not appear that Muzzin will be returning this season - and quite possibly at all. He remains on LTIR which provides the Leafs with $5.625M in cap room.

That's not the only bad news the Leafs received on Monday. A game-time scratch on Saturday against the Canucks, T.J. Brodie has been placed in IR and will be out for a minimum of 7 days as he recovers from an oblique injury. It could be longer, if the John Tavares oblique injury during training camp is any indication. The injury kept the captain out of action for multiple weeks. It was initially thought that Brodie was unable to play Saturday after taking a shot off his knee Friday against the Penguins, but that is not the case.

With Brodie now out, Jordie Benn would appear to be the front-runner to remain in the lineup after his performance Saturday night. In lieu of placing Brodie on IR, the Leafs recalled blueline prospect Mac Hollowell and forward Pontus Holmberg from the Marlies.
