John Gibson's agent steps up to clear the air on trade request rumour

Earlier this morning reports surfaced that John Gibson was and is unhappy in Anaheim and is open to being traded. Gibson does have a modified no trade clause meaning he would have to approve of any trade involving him. He also has a cap hit of $6.4M for the next 5 years so any move to a contending team like the Leafs would require the Ducks to take some salary back.

Gibson's agent, Kurt Overhardt spoke with local New Jersey Devils reporter Ryan Novozinski this afternoon and claimed it was fake news. He said, "There's been no discussion on (Gibson's) desire to move. There's no truth to it."

This isn't the first time Gibson's name has come up in trade discussions, and the Ducks are essentially in a rebuild so it would make sense that he would want to go somewhere he can win. His agent could be playing "nice" with the Ducks so that they have some leverage in trade talks as his M-NTC would essentially only allow the Ducks to deal with 21 teams. While it's still two thirds of the league, if a team knows that their team is where Gibson wants to go it will hinder Anaheim's bargaining power.

If the rumours are true, however, Kyle Dubas and the Leafs should be on the phone yesterday with Anaheim to try and work out a deal.
