Joseph Woll speaks after Leafs' first loss of the season
After two very high-scoring games and some "bad bounces", according to Ilya Samsonov, he received the night off last night with Joseph Woll picking up his first start of the season. It was Woll's first start since Game 5 against Florida in the second round of the playoffs and despite losing the game 4-1 against the Chicago Blackhawks, Woll actually looked fairly solid.
Woll stopped 27 of 30 shots he faced in the loss. The three goals he gave up, however, were not on him as they were all scored on odd-man rushes - two on breakaways. Following the game, Woll was asked about the team's performance.
"I felt good in the net. Looking back, having one of those breakaways in the second would've been nice for the team and the momentum at the time. It was great to see how hard we were battling. Once we got down it kind of flipped a switch. The pucks don't always go in, but from a process standpoint, we looked really good and created a lot of chances."
Unfortunately for Woll, the Leafs were unable to capitalize on any of their scoring chances in an attempt to win their third straight game coming from behind. Although he was not responsible for the deficit, Woll took the responsibility of having to make a save when the Leafs had the momentum as something he can improve on for his next start. Here's what he had to say on what he learned after the team's first loss of the season:
"For one, how important every save is and being able to come up with key saves for the team in big momentum times like that. I felt comfortable in the net. Moving forward, I'll look at the video and find some stuff to work on and I'll be ready for my next chance."
Morgan Rielly was asked following the game about Woll's performance in a losing effort against the Hawks. Rielly made it very clear that the team is behind Woll and that last night's loss was not on him.
"Joe was awesome. He was great for us last year. He had an outstanding training camp and a great young goalie. We're very lucky to have him." - Rielly on Woll
Sheldon Keefe echoed Rielly's sentiments. He, like Rielly, did not fault Woll for the loss, fully supporting his goaltender during his post-game media availability.
"He was good. The goals he let in were guys in alone on him. We didn't get in alone on their goalie at all the whole night. They got three goals on us in alone on the goaltender. That is the difference." - Keefe on Woll
Woll likely won't have to wait too long to rebound and make his next start as the Leafs begin a five-game road-trip Thursday in Florida, playing almost every other day until they return home to face LA on October 31st.
