Trying to start the season with a clean bill of health is tough sledding in the NHL and even though the Toronto Maple Leafs received good news regarding the status of their captain, John Tavares, they were less somber in regards to injured defenseman, Timothy Liljegren.

The former first round pick underwent sports hernia surgery in September and was expected to miss at least the first month of the season. The Maple Leafs subsequently placed Liljegren on the LTIR yesterday with the 23-man roster having been due at 5 p.m.

Even though he was seen skating last week with the other injured Leafs, head coach Sheldon Keefe gave us a little insight on what Liljegren is dealing with and when to expect him back in the lineup.

"Pretty limited in what he's doing, both on the ice and in the gym, given the nature of his injury., That's something that's going to take time. In terms of the timeline itself, he's not in the cards to be joining practice anytime soon."

Keefe on Liljegren's status

In parts of 3 seasons, Liljegren has suited up in 74 games where he has scored 5 goals and 24 points, including a 23-point season last year. He was expected to take an even bigger leap this year, but due to the injury, it's really anyone's guess how long it will take before he'll return to form, even once he's healthy. The 6 starting defensemen for the Leafs are set to include: Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin, Mark Giordano, Rasmus Sandin, Justin Holl, and T.J. Brodie.
