Leafs Nation held their collective breath last night while Auston Matthews laid on the ice in considerable pain in the dying seconds of the third period against the Hurricanes. After scoring twice in the game, Matthews had fallen awkwardly while going hard to the net and was clipped in the back of the head on his way down. Mitch Marner would eventually score the game winner in overtime, but while the celebrations went on, the concern for Matthews remained.

The incident was terrifyingly similar to the one that knocked John Tavares out of last year's playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens. Thankfully, Matthews was able to leave the ice under his own power, albeit with a little bit of help.

Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe didn't have an update on Matthews' status post game, but after today's practice he was able to let us know that Matthews arrived at the Leafs training facility today feeling good. According to Keefe he will be re-evaluated tomorrow and see where the Leafs star is at.

I know I speak for everyone here at LetsGoLeafs.com when I say we wish Auston a speedy recovery and can't wait to see him back on the ice. We will continue to monitor the situation and update when we have more information, but for now, the news is as good as it can be.
