Goaltending has been the big question lately. Rookie Erik Kallgren is coming off his worst outing as a Leafs netminder, but has overall been very good. Mrazek is the opposite, he's been awful lately but his last start went fairly well. Jack Campbell got some work in before practice, but wasn't a full participant, look for him to up his ice time as his recovery progresses.
Sheldon Keefe told reporters after practice that Kallgren will start Saturday against the Habs while Mrazek takes on the Panthers on Sunday. Kallgren will likely have to be sharp against the Habs, who will treat Saturday's game like its game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Kallgren will need to keep up his excellent positional play while doing a better job of controlling his rebounds if he wants a win in La Belle Province.
If Wednesday's game against the Devils was a test for Mrazek, Sunday's will be a gauntlet as he tries to hold the league's top offence at bay. Luckily for Mrazek, the Panthers goaltenders are about as consistent as he is. How the first meeting of these 2 high powered teams is going to go is anyone's guess, but Mrazek will be the key to the game for the Leafs. If he plays well they'll have a good chance of solidifying their grip on 2nd in the Atlantic. This is a very important game for the Leafs, as it is the their first meeting with the Panthers this season. This is what is considered a four-point game, as a win for the Buds would prevent the Panthers from gaining two points, and it would also give the Leafs two points and close the gap on Florida, erasing one of their games.
