The waiver wire introduced a new face today as the Los Angeles Kings have very surprisingly opted to waive goaltender Cal Petersen, who only recently signed a massive contract. This after another disastrous performance in between the pipes on Tuesday evening.

Last night the Los Angeles Kings lost in overtime to the Seattle Kraken by a score of 9-8 with Petersen allowing 4 goals on 16 shots in relief of Jonathan Quick. On the season he is 5-3-2 with a pedestrian 868 SV% and a gaudy 3.75 GAA.

This move comes as a shock - somewhat - considering that he just signed a 3-year contract with a $5 million AAV. Chris Johnston points out that he is under contract for 2 more seasons (beyond this year) and he also due a 4 million dollar signing bonus next year. Petersen was thought to be the heir apparent to the net in Los Angeles, taking over for the veteran Jonathan Quick.

Petersen was paid rather handsomely after his efforts last season when he posted a 20-14-2 record to help the Los Angeles Kings reach the post-season. His peripherals weren't great as he had a .895 SV% and a 2.89 GAA but he was coming off a 3-year stretch as backup goaltender where he accrued a .916 SV% and a 2.79 GAA for a losing team.
