Kyle Dubas denies media request to discuss the state of the team
For the Toronto Maple Leafs, the start to the 2022-23 season has been, well, let's just say less than ideal. Everyone knows how important this season is for the future of the franchise. There are jobs on the line this season and, unfortunately, the early returns on the offseason moves have not been very good, aside from Ilya Samsonov, who has been excellent.
One of the hottest seats belongs to Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, who has taken more than his fair share of heat since taking over as GM of the team in 2018. Most pundits and many within the team's loyal fanbase view this as a must-win season for Dubas, meaning that the Buds will need to advance probably more than one round in the postseason for his job to be considered safe. Others believe that Dubas will be safe regardless and that a key piece of the roster will be moved before a mass exodus of the front office takes place.
Postmedia's Michael Traikos revealed on Monday that a request has gone in from the travelling media to have a bit of a Q&A with Dubas. There are a lot of questions that need answering, but unfortunately, that will have to wait, because Dubas has denied the request.
"The travelling media asked to speak to general manager Kyle Dubas about the state of the team. The request was denied. The team wants to present a business-as-usual demeanour. Dubas's media appearances are typically scheduled well in advance."
-Traikos on the request to speak with Kyle Dubas
This could mean that Dubas is pre-occupied and simply does not have time to squeeze in a meeting with the press, or it could mean that the team is simply trying to come out the tailspin after a 1-2-2 Western road swing. Any meetings with the media are sure to yield additional storylines that could further perpetuate the negative energy surrounding the team at the moment.
Perhaps a win against the Flyers this week changes things. Who knows? But having Dubas decline to meet with the media tells us that he's either not interested in any more negative press or that he's working hard to try to right the ship, whether that means through intense meetings within the organization or seeking help from outside of it, possibly by way of a trade.
