Just days before being relived of his duties as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kyle Dubas took to the podium during the team's season-ending presser and revealed that he may not have it in him to come back and that he and his family may want to take some time away to refocus and reassess their situation in Toronto. The move was a rare glimpse of real vulnerability shown by a high-ranking executive in the organization, but unfortunately for Dubas, it also planted seeds of doubt in the minds of his employers.

Dubas also said during that same presser that he had no intention of signing anywhere other than Toronto. When pressed to elaborate and provide a more definitive answer as to whether it was Toronto or nowhere, Dubas confirmed that he had no intention of signing with another organization at all that that if it wasn't Toronto for him, that his plan was to take some time off, stating that we wouldn't see him popping up elsewhere in a week. I suppose he gets off on a technicality, because it took approximately two weeks for him to wind up in Pittsburgh.

In terms of how Dubas and his family reached the decision to relocate to Pittsburgh, Dubas revealed during Thursday's presser that it was actually his wife who approached him and told him that it would be in their best interest to explore the option of moving to Pittsburgh. Dubas also provided a bit of a timeline as to how it all began.

"Early the next morning, I was on the phone with one of our staff [ in Toronto] and I had a 617 area code call and I hung up and I had a message from Sam [Kennedy of Fenway Sports Group], who told me that they had permission from Toronto [to speak with me]. My initial inkling was that we need to take a breath here before we entertain other options, because that was our intention at the beginning of the week. My wife, later in the day, said 'I actually think you should go and at least meet with them, because if they're great people and they have a long-term view of the organization and it's going to be a great fit for you in terms of what everybody is about that you're going to work for and work with and the staff has a great feel - we're going to be moving anyway now.. Shannon's view was, if we're going to move, we may as well move now before the kids are too entrenched." - Dubas on how the idea to sit down with Fenway Sports Group came about

Many in Leafs Nation weren't pleased with Dubas' decision to take the job in Pittsburgh just 2 weeks after confirming that he wouldn't pop up elsewhere, but in all honesty, Dubas and his family can do whatever they like. It's their life, they only get one, and if they want to pivot and make decisions on a whim that they feel will provide stability and security for their family, so be it. That's just my two cents on the matter. Yes, I understand what he said, but we've all been in a position in our lives where I'm sure we said one thing before we had all the information and then had a change of heart later on.

Dubas discusses the whole thing at the 18:44 mark in the link below:
