While common sense told us that the Leafs would likely go with Samsonov/Woll in 2023-24, Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos is reporting that Kyle Dubas liked Matt Murray and was prepared to stand behind his bet and roll with Murray for the final year of his deal, which would have meant either rolling 3 goalies again this year or losing one of Woll or Samsonov.
As Kypreos also mentioned, Dubas could look to reunite Murray with his former Pittsburgh Penguins. There's a lot of uncertainty right now in Pittsburgh with regard to goaltending. Tristan Jarry is set to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1st, which puts the Pens in a difficult situation, with only Casey DeSmith signed through next season. Bringing in Matt Murray would, at the very least, provide a veteran body with which DeSmith could share the crease. However, with durability concerns on Murray, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Pens also try to wrangle up an insurance option in Pittsburgh to ensure that they're not left with one NHL netminder for long stints this season if Murray's health doesn't hold up.
