Just hours after acquiring defenseman Conor Timmins from the Arizona Coyotes, the Leafs were in action against the red-hot New Jersey Devils, who were riding a 13-game winning streak coming into Wednesday's game against the Buds. The Leafs skated away with a razor-close 2-1 regulation win, but this one was not won without its fair share of controversy.

The Devils had a trio of goals disallowed in the game before finally breaking through and finding the back of the net. Matt Murray was sensational in the win, posting a .971 SV% and 1.00 GAA, stopping 34 of the 35 shots he faced.

It wasn't all good news for the Leafs though, as defenseman Jordie Benn was forced to leave the game during the second period. Benn did briefly return in the third period but left shortly after the period began and did not return. This is horrendous news for the Leafs, who are already down 3 veteran defenders in Jake Muzzin, Morgan Rielly and T.J. Brodie. Benn played a season-low 9:36 of ice time in the contest.

Following the game, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed to the media that Benn did indeed suffer an upper-body injury in the game, though he didn't have any specifics on the ailment or even an approximate timeline on his recovery. An update on Benn's status is likely coming at some point on Thursday.

Not good news. Not good news at all.
