Per the original report from Tuesday evening, the Leafs have announced that forward Kyle Clifford has been placed on injured reserve. With a roster spot having opened up, the Leafs have also announced that they'll be calling up a defenseman, likely for the remainder of their current road trip.

According to the Leafs' PR account on Twitter, the team has called up defenseman Filip Kral from the Marlies. Kral, 23, is a 5th round pick of the Leafs back in 2018. He has not played any games in the NHL thus far but has accumulated 71 games of AHL experience.

Kral played 58 of his 71 games for the Marlies last season, notching 3 goals and 18 assists for a total of 21 points. Thus far this season, Kral has been held without a point in 3 games and is a -1.

Kral is not likely to play in San Jose, LA or Anaheim. He's more of an insurance piece for the Leafs while they're on the road than anything else.

This news comes 24 hours after the Leafs announced that Jordie Benn and Timothy Liljegren have been loaned to the Marlies on conditioning stints. Both Benn and Liljegren are eligible to play 3 games with the Marlies before re-joining the Leafs. There is the possibility of the Leafs applying to have their conditioning stints extended by a couple of games if need be.
