Over the weekend, a tragedy had occurred in which 6 people were senselessly shot and killed in Vaughan, Ontario, leaving everyone reeling, grieving the loss of these 6 individuals and in complete shock. Following the tragic incident on December 18th, it was revealed to the hockey world that Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Victor Mete lost a relative in the shooting - his grandfather, 79-year-old Vittorio Panza.

On Thursday, Mete finally broke his silence and spoke publicly, via Twitter, thanking everyone who has reached out to offer their love and support to Mete and his entire family during this unfathomable time.

"On behalf of my entire family, I would like to say thank you to everyone for their condolences, prayers, and support during this terrible time. Our hearts are also with the other victims and their families that are going through this unspeakable tragedy.

"Thank you to all of the first responders for your brave response on Sunday and to [York Regional Police] for your continued support. RIP Nonno."

Our hearts go out to the entire Mete/Panza family during this difficult time and throughout the holiday season as they continue to mourn the loss of a loved one and several within their community.

Mete has been sidelined since suffering a lower-body injury back on December 6th, though the injury is not believed to be a serious one, per Sheldon Keefe. Here's hoping we'll see him back at full health early in the new year.
