There had been hope that the Matthews suspension for his cross check to the neck of Rasmus Dahlin would become the new standard for those types of plays. Immediately after the incident, NHL Player Safety said he would have a hearing and a day later was suspended for 2 games.

Well last night, Canes winger Andrei Svechnikov charged at Stars center Tyler Seguin and cross checked him directly in the side of the head, neck. Like Dahlin, Seguin got up immediately and seemed no worse for the wear.

We're almost 24 hours after Svechnikov's infraction and have yet to hear from the NHL's Department of Player Safety about any supplemental discipline. Not even a fine.

The league continues to demonstrate its lack of consistency with penalties in games and how it handles supplemental discipline. The fact that it is the same play that Matthews was suspended for makes you question if he was suspended for the infraction, or simply because he wears a Leaf jersey.

Should Svechnikov have received an automatic 2-game suspension like Matthews got for his cross check on Rasmus Dahlin?
