Both Elliotte Friedman and Chris Johnston have reported the Leafs will continue to look at the goalie market in search of a backup. One intriguing name that will become a free agent on Wednesday is 25-year-old Ilya Samsonov, though there will likely be multiple suitors lined up to try to ink the former 22nd overall pick (2015). Other options like Montreal's Jake Allen or Anaheim's Anthony Stolarz could be potential options that make sense and won't break the bank.
With $5.6M in cap space, the Leafs will also look to re-sign Rasmus Sandin, to whom they sent a qualifying offer yesterday. First though, the Leafs and Sandin need to figure out a plan to get him into the lineup more frequently, as Sandin's concern is that he is being held back with Morgan Reilly, Jake Muzzin and Mark Giordano ahead of him on the left side of the Leafs' blueline.
Sandin's next deal will be similar to that of Timothy Liljegren's 2-year, $2.8M deal ($1.4M AAV) that he signed a few weeks ago. With the potential of an offersheet being presented to Sandin, the Leafs will hope to sign him sooner rather than later to avoid losing the 22-year-old or having to move other pieces to accommodate a higher yearly salary for him.
