Over the weekend, we saw the likes of Alex Steeves, Pontus Holmberg and Joseph Woll sent down to the Marlies for one game and then recalled as the Leafs had a couple of days off. The trio were recalled again following the game and joined the Leafs for practice yesterday.

Unfortunately for Steeves, he found himself as an extra at practice once Auston Matthews surprised everyone by showing up in a regular blue jersey on Tuesday, indicating his imminent return. Matthews said following practice that he "feels good" and would see how he felt this morning after the game-day skate, but all signs point to him returning against Chicago tonight. Further indicating Matthews will be returning is that late last night, Steeves was sent back down to the Marlies to open a roster spot for Matthews.

It's been a whirlwind few days for Steeves, who made his season debut last Friday, played on Saturday for the Leafs and then Monday for the Marlies. It was a short audition, but he performed fairly well and should be at or near the top of the call-up list again.
