The Leafs' official PR account revealed on social media on Wednesday at noon ET that Murray is out indefinitely and will land on LTIR to start the 2023-24 season.
This is quite the shocking announcement, as Murray was healthy and ready to play when the Leafs played Florida in the 2nd round of the playoffs in May. There had been no reports indicating that Murray had suffered any type of an injury during practice throughout that series, nor was an announcement made that he had suffered any sort of an off ice injury at some point this summer.
We know that Murray's history of concussions was a legitimate concern, especially after suffering one in early April. He also suffered adductor and ankle injuries last season as well.
Murray has one year left on his contract with the Leafs, which carries a $4.687M cap hit. The team is currently more than $12M over the cap, but with Murray's contract, as well as Jake Muzzin's contract ($5.625M) both expected to be moved to LTIR, that frees up approximately $10.31M, bringing their overage down to just a little over $2M.
