In a suprising move today after the Leafs decided to cancel practice, they assigned forward Pontus Holmberg to the Toronto Marlies. Holmberg, who has missed the past two contests with the flu bug that has been going around the Leafs' dressing room, has been a staple on the third line for Sheldon Keefe.

A sixth round pick of the Leafs in 2018, Holmberg has skated in 28 games for the Leafs where he has registered 4 goals and 11 points while playing an average of 10:28 per game.

This move is a bit of a head-scratcher. From a pure talent and performance perspective, Holmberg absolutely belongs in the NHL. He has played well in the role in which he's been cast and is often the most noticeable player on his line. Unless this has something to do with his waiver eligibility or unless the Leafs have another move coming to fill a spot on the 23-man roster, the move doesn't make much sense.

I suppose we'll find out the rationale behind the move in short order. Holmberg was on an emergency loan, so another reason for the move may be that his eligibility to be up with the team on that loan is over. If that's the case, perhaps we'll see him recalled tomorrow.
