Leafs opt to terminate loan agreement for prospect, looking to keep him in North America
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 draft, Dmitry Ovchinnikov has been on loan to Sibir in the KHL. He has also joined the Marlies the past two post-seasons once Sibir's season was finished. He has registered 2 points in 11 playoff games with the Marlies and last season posted 13 points in 68 games with Sibir.
For the upcoming season, it is believed that Ovchinnikov will be joining the Marlies full time as the Leafs have officially terminated his loan agreement with Sibir. The diminutive forward will be 21 when training camp begins and will likely be battling for a spot in the Marlies' bottom six.
Given that Ovchinnikov is coming over to join the Marlies and Semyon Der-Arguchitsev is now looking to return to the club after briefly leaving, it would seem the Leafs are preparing to have a number of promotions from the Marlies to Leafs, which likely includes Bobby McMann, Pontus Holmberg and Alex Steeves, opening up more opportunity in the Marlies.
