Schenn, along with Morgan Rielly, formed a pretty formidable pair - arguably the Leafs' best pairing for the entirety of their playoff run - and there seems to be a mutual interest between he and the Leafs in bringing him back next season. However, until the contract is signed, everything is up in the air and, as Schenn mentioned on Monday night, during an interview with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill from "Leafs Morning Take", he might like to put down some roots somewhere, rather than just signing another 1-year deal.
During his interview with Rosehill and Alberga, Schenn mentioned that he has probably moved around 8 or 9 times over the last 5 or 6 years, which is a bit of a gong show as he has a young family and wouldn't mind settling down and signing a multi-year deal somewhere to put a hold on all of the moving around.
Having such a young family, with 3 young kids, you can definitely understand why Schenn may not be interested in another 1-year deal. Now it's more about finding a multi-year deal that makes sense for both Schenn and the Leafs. Many reports that have come out suggesting what Schenn might earn on his next deal seem to indicate that he could see a pay bump up to between $1.5M-$2M on his next deal. If he is willing to take a bit of a haircut on that number if the Leafs were willing to go 3 years, that could be a deal that works out well for both sides - say something in the $1.25M range.
We'll see what the future holds between the Leafs and Schenn. With free agency opening up in a little over 3 weeks, we should begin to hear some more chatter shortly here.
