Leafs provide official update on Timothy Liljegren's injury
Late in the first period of Thursday's shootout loss to the Boston Bruins, Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren was sent awkwardly into the boards by Boston's Brad Marchand. There was no call on the play and there was zero response from the team following the play, much to the chagrin of Leafs Nation. After the game, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said that officials explained they did not see the play, but Wes McCauley was watching the entire time, as you can clearly see.
The Leafs placed Liljegren on LTIR this morning and, following the morning skate, Keefe revealed that Liljegren has a high ankle sprain. The Leafs' bench boss didn't provide a timeline for his return. However, we know that based on LTIR rules, Liljegren will miss at minimum 24 days and 10 games. Similar injuries have required up to 6-8 week recovery timelines in the past.
The Leafs are already without Jake McCabe (groin) and Conor Timmins (lower body) on the blueline, but McCabe is expected to be back sooner than later. There has still been no update on when Timmins will return. Without Liljegren, McCabe and Timmins, the Leafs will look to Max Lajoie who was recalled this morning along with Simon Benoit (also recalled this morning) and William Lagesson to hold down the fort on the third pairing. The depth is being tested early.
