The Leafs may have started free agency off a little slower than most, but patience paid off for Brad Treliving, who landed one of the top available UFAs in Tyler Bertuzzi on day two, with a 1-year $5.5M deal.

Before the deal, the Leafs were already up against the cap, with a little over $400k in available cap space, which becomes $6M when Jake Muzzin lands on LTIR. Now, after the Bertuzzi deal, the Leafs find themselves even tighter when it comes to cap space.

The Leafs still need to sign RFA goaltender Ilya Samsonov, which should eat up at least an additional $3.5M, which leads us to believe that a trade is coming to free up some cap space. And according to Insider David Pagnotta, the Leafs may also be working on signing Max Domi, which means that we could see more than 1 trade to create some space.

The Leafs are not in any rush necessarily to become cap compliant, as they have until the start of the season to worry about trimming down to $83.5M. They're also able to exceed the cap by 10% during the offseason, so the Buds can go up to a little over $91M for the time being if they really need to.
