Last season, Kyle Dubas managed to get out of Nick Ritchie's 2-year contract by trading him and a conditional pick to Arizona for Ilya Lyubushkin. Ritchie has found some success in Arizona and Lyubushkin immediately became a punishing top-4 blueliner for the Leafs before departing for Buffalo as a free agent.

The condition surrounding the draft pick the Leafs traded as part of that deal was that Arizona had the option to select either the Leafs' 2023 third round pick or their 2025 second round pick. According to Chris Johnston, Arizona had until last night to make their decision and they chose to defer the selection to the 2025 second rounder.

With the selection of the 2025 pick, the Leaf have just 3 picks in the upcoming draft (3rd, 5th, 6th) and are missing their second and third round picks in the 2024 draft. It doesn't leave the Leafs with much pick capital as they look to upgrade their blueline with less than a week until the trade deadline.
