Canada defeated the United-States in a thrilling 3-2 game on Wednesday to win the gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Of course, what seems like tradition at this point, Marie-Philip Poulin scored the golden goal.

Following Leafs practice on Thursday, Jason Spezza was asked about the state of women's hockey. He said the following:

"I think it's growing. There are some tremendous players. There's an appetite to help grow the game. It's a shame the games weren't on primetime. Hopefully we can help them grow the game."

Spezza also spoke about how his daughters were "thrilled" about Team Canada's victory last night.

Women's hockey was at the forefront of hockey news during the Olympics. Some believe there is not enough balance among nations, while others have emphasized that this is how you grow the game. One thing that is important for growing the sport is that making sure the it has the same coverage for the other 3 years and 11 months outside of the Olympics. Women's hockey has definitely grown, but there is still room for improvement. Nobody denies that. The women just need to be given a fair shake.

We often talk about players using their platforms for good. Jason Spezza wants to use his to help grow women's hockey, which is great for the sport overall. The Leafs have done a lot of work in the past with the PWHPA. Hopefully they can continue their partnership and help to grow women's hockey to give the next generation of young women a chance to do something special.

The Canadian women proved in the Olympics that the sport is worth watching, worth investing in, and worth growing.
