Jones was signed late in the off-season on a one-year deal, which brought about a lot of questions since it seemed that the Leafs would be going with Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll as their tandem. Then all throughout training camp and the pre-season games, the waiting game started in regards to when the Leafs would execute the move.
The Maple Leafs weren't the only team with a veteran or stable goaltender to place on waivers as the Seattle Kraken placed Chris Driedger on waivers yesterday, the Edmonton Oilers did the same with Calvin Pickard, and the New Jersey Devils placed Erik Kallgren on waiver a few days ago. Montreal and Philadelphia are in the same boat, so it'll be interesting to see if Jones ends up being claimed, but it's worth noting that all of the abovementioned netminders cleared waivers this week.
Jones has struggled over the course of his last 4 seasons but still has 444 games under his belt, 225 victories, a career save percentage of .905, and has been to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Leafs are hoping he clears waivers, in which case he will likely beg sent to the Marlies.
Jones wasn't the only Leaf placed on waivers on Sunday, as they also waived defensemen Simon Benoit, William Lagesson and Maxime Lajoie, in addition to forwards Kyle Clifford and Dylan Gambrell.
