As many Leaf fans are aware, today marks day one of the Maple Leafs prospect Development Camp. Top prospect Matthew Knies was among the attendees, and after day one, he had a chance to speak with the media about why he decided to stay in University for another season and his goals for next season.

The 19-year-old prospect explained to the media today that he decided to stay at the University of Minnesota for another season because he did not feel he was mature enough both as a player, and as a person. He explained that while he listened to advice from friends and family, that ultimately the decision he made was his. He went on to say he hopes to be able to join the big club at the end of this coming season. His full quotes are available below:

Knies was a second round pick (57th overall) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman last season, he produced 33 points (15 goals & 18 assists) in 33 games for the University of Minnesota, which earned him a spot on the league's all freshmen team.

Knies is listed at 6-foot-3 and weighing 210 pounds, so he definitely has the build of a full fledged NHLer. The left winger's scouting reports describe him as a powerful forward with a high amount of skill, pointing out that he is also good along the boards and has a heavy shot. It's far too early to tell, but this sounds like something that might look really good on Auston Matthews' left side. The two are both from Arizona, and are familiar with one another, so there is also a personal connection there.

If Knies can continue to develop his game in Minnesota this season, he may end up being the perfect acquisition for the big club next spring ahead of their hopeful playoff run.
