The Leafs were one of four NHL teams who took part in the NHL's 2023 Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden. Naturally, William Nylander was the number on draw at the event, which allowed the rest of the team to sort of fly beneath the radar and enjoy some time out on the town, including Matthew Knies, Joseph Woll, Conor Timmins and Bobby McMann.
During a trip to a Stockholm restaurant, Knies found himself dining on Swedish snails. He must have enjoyed his experience, as he returned to the restaurant later in the week on the recommendation of the waitress, who continued to push for the players to try the pig neck, which he called "unbelievable".
Knies has family ties to Slovakia, so his palate is a little more diverse than most players on the team. Personally, I'm a big texture guy, so snails would be off the table for me. The pig neck, however - that's something I'd definitely try.
Naturally, we don't yet know where the next Global Series will land or if the Leafs will be involved. However, I think it's pretty safe to say that if the Leafs end up in Mexico City, Germany or anywhere else on the planet, Matthew Knies won't shy away from trying the most eccentric dishes on the trip.
Knies has played well in his rookie season, though the score sheet doesn't necessarily show it. Knies has accumulated just 9 points in 17 games, but he does seem to be gaining some steam, having scored 2 goals in his last 3 games as he grows more comfortable playing alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on the team's top line.
