Playing in Toronto, AKA the hockey mecca, has afforded the two-time Rocket Richard Trophy and reigning Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award winner Auston Matthews some unique endorsement deals, including with brands like Apple, CargoJet, Bet99 and more.

This year, Matthews became the first pro athlete endorsed by Lids hats and apparel, which is a dream come true for him, as he considers himself to be a huge hat enthusiast. Now he has access to as many hats as his heart desires. I'd love to see his hat collection.

This week, Matthews and Lids came together to shoot a new commercial where Matthews explains where his love of hats began and what types of hats he's into. He even uses a tablet and stylus to draw different hats on himself in some of his old fashion photos. If you have yet to see the clip, check it out below:

Matthews is certainly among the highest earning NHLers in terms of endorsements. This is one reason why I believe Matthews is a Leaf for life and will sign a max-term deal as soon as he becomes eligible. Relocating to a market like LA, NY or even Arizona, it's unlikely that Matthews will be able to cash in the same way in endorsements as he does in Toronto, which is basically the center of the hockey universe.

While I'm sure NY and LA offer a lot in the way of lifestyle upgrades, most of the big endorsement deals in those markets involve NBA, MLB and NFL players. In Toronto, Matthews is the pinnacle. He's the biggest star in the city and I don't think it's even arguable that anyone ranks above him in terms of sports figures. No disrespect to the Blue Jays, but I don't think they have anyone in the same stratosphere as Matthews in terms of popularity and star status.
