Matthews comments on becoming the fastest Leaf to 500 points
After collecting an assist on William Nylander's second period goal, Auston Matthews became the fastest Leaf to reach the 500-point milestone, doing so in just 445 games. He surpassed the previous team record that was owned by Darryl Sittler, who did so in 517 games. Matthews was asked about the feat after Tuesday's 6-5 SO loss to the Blues. A somber Matthews had this to say:
"I think there's definitely some special meaning behind it with the history of this organization and the players that have come and worn this jersey before us. I've been fortunate every year to play with some great players and have a great team around us. So it definitely means a lot."
Not only did Matthews become the fastest Leaf to reach 500 points, but he became the fourth youngest in NHL history to reach the milestone. Only Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin have hit the milestone at a younger age.
Naturally, Matthews isn't too wrapped up in achieving individual goals this year. He wants to win and he wants to see the Leafs get past the first round for the first time in nearly 2 decades. Beyond that, he wants to win a Stanley Cup. I'm sure, if you asked him, he'd trade in every individual accolade to hoist the Cup this summer.
