He won the Hart Trophy in a landslide, collecting 119 of 195 first place votes, and was voted Most Oustanding Player by the NHLPA to win the Ted Lindsay Award as well. Since bursting onto the scene with a 4-goal game against Ottawa in his NHL debut, Matthews has developed and grown in leaps and bounds in all aspects of his game.
When speaking with reporters, Matthews touched on his time in Toronto so far saying, "I've really enjoyed my time in Toronto and it's been special. I love every single guy on that team, the management staff. The whole organization from top to bottom is first class and I feel really fortunate to play there."
It's no surprise Matthews loves Toronto, even with all of the pressure that comes with playing here. He's one of the few that thrives in the spotlight, but also doesn't let things put out in the media get to him. He just goes about his business and does whatever he can to help the Leafs win. Dubas and company have done an excellent job to surround him and the other members of the core with the resources they need to continue to get better and to hopefully bring a Cup back to Toronto.
