For months the media was reporting that voting for the Hart Trophy would be tight and go down to the wire. At times it was suggested Igor Shesterkin was the front-runner, but as it turns out, it wasn't even close.

Auston Matthews not only won the Hart Trophy last night, he completely dominated the voting. In doing so, he became the first Leaf to win the award since 1955. There were a total of 195 first place votes to be handed out and overwhelmingly, Matthews received 119 of them. It was a blowout as Connor McDavid only received 29 first place votes and Shesterkin only received 24.

Matthews set a Leafs record with 60 goals, passing Rick Vaive's 54 with ease. He also set a new career high in points with 106, became the first player since the early 90's to score 50 goals in a 50-game span and the first player in league history to have 4 goal scoring streaks of 6 games or more in a single season. To score goals at the rate he did, and how he did it, the voting should've never been close anyway and it was great to see things go down the way they should have for a change. We haven't seen a goal scoring season like this in 10 years, since Stamkos hit 60 in 2011-12. Matthews also reached that total in just 73 games, while it took Stamkos all 82.
