Auston Matthews had shown signs of being in obvious discomfort on Saturday while playing against the Winnipeg Jets. The source of the discomfort appears to be the same spot on his side/lower back, where Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn cross-checked him on Thursday in Toronto.

Immediately after the hit, Matthews showed signs of pain and went on to take an absolute beating that night between other hits and blocked shots. He even took a maintenance day yesterday and, unfortunately, still seems not to be feeling 100%.

The Leafs seem to be monitoring the situation closely and Matthews did not leave the game because of the obvious ailment, despite being spotted with the trainer having it worked on at one point on Saturday. With the Jets game being the first of 5 road games on the docket for the Leafs, hopefully this doesn't evolve into something worse than it is now for Matthews.

While it certainly hindered him at points throughout the game, the issue didn't prevent him from helping his team secure a 4-1 victory in Winnipeg. Matthews had 13 shot attempts in the contest and skated away with 3 assists for his troubles.
