With that being said, Greg Wyshynski of ESPN sat down with a number of players at the event and asked them what rule they would change if they were commissioner for the day. Mitch Marner had perhaps the most interesting answer, as many players responded wanting to change overtime and shootout formats. Marner, however, just went all out and wants to give the game more of a "shinny" feel.
I certainly don't hate it. For one, we'd no longer have to sit through 20 minute offside reviews because the league is focused on using microscopes to determine blade and puck positioning or whether or not a player's skate had broken the plain over the blueline. It would also force teams like the Islanders to avoid playing the trap style game as teams would be able to stretch their structures out.
There's no question that more offense would mean more excitement for fans. I'm sure that many players, if given the chance, could really help the NHL to adjust and establish some alternative rules to help improve the on-ice product. Marner's idea is just one example.
