On top of filling out their roster for this season, they also have to make sure they have enough cap space next season for extensions for Captain Bo Horvat and J.T. Miller who are both UFAs at the end of next season. There have been no updates as of late on the status of an extension for Horvat, but Frank Seravalli reported this morning that Miller will not be giving the Canucks any type of "hometown discount". Entering the final year of a 5-year deal that pays him $5.25M for the season, Miller is also coming off of a 99 point season and will be looking to cash in with a long-term deal with a significant raise.
The question is, will he be willing to sign an extension come July 13th when free agency opens or will he wait until the end of the upcoming season in the hopes of duplicating last season's performance and increase his bargaining power more? I'd also have to imagine that the Canucks could look at dealing him if his demands are astronomical.
