NHL Insider says Leafs not behaving as though Mikheyev and Campbell are priorities
Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN was certainly an interesting one. There were updates from Darren Dreger, Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun on the Canucks, Leafs and Flames.
Dreger's report was centered around the large amount of interest the Canucks have had in
Brock Boeser and
J.T. Miller and the fact that they're not just looking for futures in any deal involving two of their top wingers. They'll consider moves for other established NHLers as well.
LeBrun's report was on the Johnny Gaudreau situation in Calgary, with the Flames having extended a significant offer to the Gaudreau camp almost immediately after their playoff run ended. There has been ongoing dialogue between the two sides, but the Flames are reportedly looking to see which way Gaudreau is leaning before the draft. I suspect that means if a deal is not close by the draft, they'll at least entertain offers on Gaudreau's negotiating rights.
Finally, Chris Johnston had news on both
Ilya Mikheyev and
Jack Campbell. Apparently, just two weeks out from the draft, the Leafs have not made any offers to Campbell, nor Mikheyev.
It's certainly starting to feel like the Leafs are going to go in a different direction, doesn't it? We're 3 weeks away from free agency, and the Leafs haven't made any attempts to lock either Mikheyev or Campbell up ahead of schedule. If I'm Dan Milstein or Kurt Overhardt, I'm probably taking that as a sign that their clients are not viewed as a priority for the Leafs.
According to CJ, the number on Mikheyev has risen to the $4.5M-$5M range. When last we heard, Mikheyev was looking for a 3-4 year term. As for Campbell, Johnston stated that Soupy could end up north of $5M.
