Last week, a reported surfaced indicating that the Leafs may be interested in acquiring hulking Vancouver Canucks' defenseman Tyler Myers. Myers would certainly add size and some physicality to the Leafs' blueline, but his cap hit is simply too much for a third pairing defenseman, which is essentially what he would be in Toronto. Myers has a cap hit of $6M for this season and next and to pay a third pairing defenseman that sort of money just does not make sense for a team who is already cap strapped.

Today, Elliotte Friedman was on The Jeff Marek Show and shot down the rumour the Leafs are interested in Myers saying, "That is not happening, earlier in season there was Myers talk, not now. Toronto is looking for a forward, not a defenseman."

While the Leafs may be looking for a forward first, particularly a middle-six forward to fill the second line left wing spot, they could still have some interest in another Canucks blueliner in Luke Schenn. Schenn has a cap hit of just $850K for this season and would give the Leafs a stable, physical presence on the back-end and some much needed insurance down the right side.
