Some interesting news to report on Wednesday has the NHL making a pretty substantial change to its COVID-19 protocols, shortening the mandatory isolation period for those who have tested positive from 10 days to 5.

This is in line with recent changes in recommendations from the CDC that those who are asymptomatic or whose symptoms are resolving and following a positive test are safe to end isolation after 5 days.

There is a caveat here, which was expected with the NHL having franchises in two countries. The caveat is that the local health authority must permit the exit of isolation, meaning that if a certain location still requires a 10-day quarantine, then the isolation period will remain the same.

There's really no telling whether or not these new protocols will benefit the NHL or become more of a hinderance, but we're about to find out. With the Omicron variant being much more transmissible than what we've become accustomed to with the original strain, we're pretty much all just learning on the fly.
