Mark Giordano dropped the gloves with Dakota Joshua before being assessed an extra 10 minute misconduct 4:45 into the first period. Matthew Knies, Nick Robertson, and Tyler Myers had also received minor penalties in the first 6:35 of the game. However, things turned up even more when Canucks defenseman Ian Cole hammered Robertson with a somewhat questionable open ice check as he was trying to get out of the defensive zone.
There was a mass of bodies in front of Ilya Samsonov and Robertson scooped up the loose puck out of the blue paint before being take down by a bone-jarring hit from Cole. Max Domi came to his teammate's defense immediately as he dropped the gloves with Cole in what was his first fighting major as a member of the Maple Leafs.
For his efforts to stand up for his teammate, Domi was given an extra 2 minutes for instigating.
As for Robertson, he hopped right back up and bounced back onto his feet as the play hadn't been called dead just yet. This is obviously an encouraging sign for Robertson, who has had his durability questioned in previous seasons. He has taken some pretty good bumps so far this year with seemingly no ill-effect.
