The Edmonton Oilers signed RFA Jesse Puljujravi earlier today, to a contract for one year worth $3M, successfully avoiding salary arbitration. Could this be a sign-and-trade scenario by the Oilers? Considering the fact that th Oilers have been trying to move Puljujarvi for several seasons, it very well might be.

Puljujravi, 24, drafted 4th overall by the Oilers in 2016, hasn't necessarily lived up to his draft hype. This contract definitely gives the Oilers some leverage in a trade and they can hopefully get something back for the big winger while his value is still decently high. Most recently, the reported as was a high pick.

Jesse could still be an effective player and there's time to help his development. Coming off of a season that saw him post career highs with 22 assists and 36 points, Puljujarvi is showing signs of life. If the Buds can acquire him for another struggling prospect or a player that is buried in our pipeline, he could provide some physicality in the top six and could fit well with captain John Tavares and William Nylander. Playing in a third line role to start might be the best option to start out, until Puljujarvi adjusts, learns the new system and finds his scoring touch. Since he is an effective two-way forward, he may fit very well with David Kampf to start out.

Puljujarvi could certainly be a solid pick up for the Leafs and under the direct supervision of development staff, I like his chances of turning into the player he was once billed as.
