Coming into the offseason, we knew the Edmonton Oilers were in the market for a defenseman. On Friday, the Oilers signed former 2nd overall pick Ryan Murray to a one-year contract worth $750K. Fun fact, the Oilers have now employed 3 of the top 4 picks from the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (Nail Yakupov, Ryan Murray, Griffin Reinhart).

Murray has played in 432 games and has amassed 128 points in that time. Those aren't flashy numbers but Murray can still be an effective bottom pairing defenseman for the Oilers.

The Oilers currently sit $6.78M over the salary cap at the moment, with a 21-man roster and they have yet to re-sign RFA forward Ryan McLeod, so a move is likely on the way, unless the Oilers plan on rolling with a 20-man roster. It's worth noting that the contracts of Oscar Klefbom and Mike Smith will save the club ~$6.3M.
