Bergeron underwent elbow surgery earlier this month to repair some tendons, and is expected to take 10-12 weeks to recover. He should be ready for training camp, which will be a boost to the Bruins seeing as Brad Marchand, Charlie McAvoy, Matt Grzelcyk and Mike Reilly are all expected to be out until late November or December after having various surgeries as well.
The Bruins have yet to hire a coach after firing Bruce Cassidy, but given Bergeron's status in the organization could the Bruins have been waiting because they wanted his opinion? It's possible. The Bruins look like they are about to enter a rebuilding phase or at least a retooling and Bergeron is one guy that you would want around to help guide the younger players finding their way in the league. On top of being the captain, and mentoring the younger players the Bruins will have in their lineup, maybe his return will help the Bruins sign David Pastrnak to a long-term extension.
Pastrnak will be a UFA after this upcoming season and has reportedly been unhappy with the Cassidy firing and management. Players often stay out of each other's disputes, but maybe Bergeron will be able to help smooth things over between the two sides.
