Much to everyone's surprise, after trying to negotiate a deal for the better part of a year in Vancouver, former Canucks captain Bo Horvat was very quick to put pen to paper in Long Island, signing a long-term deal with the New York Islanders on Sunday.

Originally, Isles GM Lou Lamoriello did not want to disclose the terms of the contract, in true Lou fashion, simply stating to the media that the contract was "too long" and for "too much money". However, trusted NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has since reported that the deal is 8 years and $8.5M per season.

The Canucks were rumoured to have offered Horvat a deal worth $7.5M per season over 8 years in their final contract offer, so it's a bit of a head-scratcher as to why they wouldn't come up a bit to ensure that their captain would remain a Canuck long-term. In the end, Horvat was dealt to the Isles for a 1st round pick (top 12 protected), Anthony Beauvillier and Aatu Raty and chose to sign for just $1M extra per season and commit what could be the remainder of his career to the Isles.
